Honoring the Greatest Generation in Lakeland, FL

City officials and residents came together to officially unveil a new monument in the WWII Memorial Plaza at Veterans Park this past December.

The plaza and the Pearl Harbor centerpiece began with a donation from Wanda Pope Felton, a Navy doctor's wife who survived the Pearl Harbor attack with her 15-month-old daughter in the basement of officers' quarters at the Kaneohe Bay Naval Air Station. Felton, who wanted to honor her late husband, Capt. Lester Pope, who manned the base hospital during the attack, caused veterans groups to think about an overall memorial plaza.
